INTO THE OPEN (ITO) is a two-year festival programme dedicated to young classical music ensembles that will work in a transnational and interdisciplinary manner together with curator artists from other genres. Its aim is to cocreate novel and inspiring formats for the performance of classical music that break out of the ‘old’ 19th century structures of the classical music scene. As such, ITO creates new approaches for engagement with young audiences, presenting classical music in a contemporary and inspiring manner, including the choice of alternative locations for the festival performances. The festivals provide unique and inclusive environments where classical music lovers, theatre or techno fans and audiences from all backgrounds can come together to experience new and exciting concert experiences.
By creating a dedicated training programme for the participating ensembles and music students, the project engages in capacity building activities to increase their skills and co-create interdisciplinary activities. ITO aims to involve over 400 musicians in the project during the two-year implementation period.
Moreover, ITO aims to build a repository of interesting co-creation formats captured throughout the festivals into a knowledge base and present concerts online, for which a dedicated website, including a user interface, provides an important tool for its dissemination.
ITO works in a cycle of two festival years, based on a self-learning principle, in which all project partners, coming from Germany, Lithuania, France and Georgia, will organise one festival per year at their premises. With its commitment to supporting young musicians and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, ITO will become a platform for interdisciplinary co-creation revolving around classical music with an impact on the cultural landscape of Europe and beyond.
